The former mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Sandra Cuevas, recently announced her return to politics in Mexico City, launching a new political project aimed at competing in the 2027 elections. Despite having been a candidate for Movimiento Ciudadano in last year's elections, Cuevas clarified that currently the only truly opposition party is the PAN.

This announcement did not generate significant repercussions in the city, as different groups, mainly related to street commerce, have reportedly restructured their positions in light of the new government of the demarcation and the migration of a sector of the Sánchez Barrios family from the PRI to Morena. Meanwhile, Clara Brugada is strengthening her territorial work in Miguel Hidalgo with a trusted collaborator.

Among the controversies of Sandra Cuevas as mayor are her disagreements with Claudia Sheinbaum, the then head of government, her public disputes, and doubts about her wealth. In Cuauhtémoc, the team of the current mayor, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, downplayed Cuevas' new political project, stating that she only has "influencers" to build her new movement.

The call to define possible candidacies in the 16 mayorships of the capital, expected for February 1, will mark the next step in Cuevas' project. After this stage, an approach to a party of the current opposition is anticipated, although it has not yet been specified which one it will be.

The management of Alessandra Rojo de la Vega has been subject to complaints over alleged irregularities upon taking office, which distances Cuevas from her successor. On the other hand, despite the recognition Sandra Cuevas made towards the PAN, the leadership of this party has not spoken on the matter. Close sources indicate that the current opposition is keeping its distance from the former mayor for two main reasons.
